Bidrin® 8
BIDRIN® is
proven to be a very dependable product for control
of thrips, plant bugs, and aphids in cotton pest
management programs. BIDRIN® provides the same
level of dependable control on all stinkbug species,
including the brown stinkbug, which data shows is
harder to control with many insecticides as compared
to the southern green stinkbug.
The
most economical, fastest-acting, broadcast
spectrum insecticide, period.

Aphid Management:
BIDRIN
8 is a contact and systemic, foliar-applied insecticide.
Aphids reproduce very rapidly and may be found on
all parts of the cotton plant. For best control,
apply BIDRIN 8 in sufficient water for good plant
coverage when dew has dried (both sides of the cotton
leaves). BIDRIN 8 is absorbed into the plant quite
rapidly and also provides surface residue for contact
control. Heavy populations of aphids will require
careful evaluation of control once applications are
made. New generations of aphids may require a second
application. Residual activity of BIDRIN 8 will depend
upon the growing condition of the plant at the time
of application and whether new aphid nymphs have
appeared since last application. Some consultants
choose to apply Methly Parathion mixed with BIDRIN
8 if initial populations are heavy. BIDRIN 8 is also
labeled in a tank mix with Trimax (1 ounce per acre)
and has shown excellent activity and extended length
of control.

Thrip Management:
Thrips have sucking and piercing mouthparts that will
rasp the young leaves causing young seedling cotton
to appear wilted and stressed. BIDRIN 8 has been
a standard for control of thrips for many years
and continues to be an effective measure. It is
important to adequately cover the cotton plants
since they are very small in the pre-bloom stage.
Thrips will migrate from nearby crops and can be
very heavy at times. Careful observation of the
cotton is needed during early stages to look for
migrating populations. Control may appear to be
less than desirable if migration is occurring,
as the insects may not have yet contacted the insecticide.
Look closely for immature thrips when evaluating
control. Stressed cotton plants will not take the
BIDRIN 8 into the plant as rapidly as vigorously
growing cotton and this can effect the residual
effectiveness of BIDRIN 8 and other systemic insecticides.

Stinkbug Management:
As
a result of several production changes over the past
few seasons, stinkbugs have become one of the major
problems in cotton in the mid-south and southeast.
This insect has two key species—Southern Green
and Brown. The Southern Green is easier to control
than the Brown with most insecticides, particularly
the pythrethroids. Stinkbugs will cause significant
yield losses without much notice in the field. They
usually damage small and medium size bolls by inserting
mouthparts into bolls in search of seeds, thus causing
severe damage to the lint. Scouting is difficult
due to the mobility of the pest. There is no standard
scouting procedure for stinkbugs. Sweepnets may be
used or cuts may be taken into small “quarter-size
(25 cent)” bolls to look for damage. Stinkbugs
will migrate to cotton from nearby crops such as
corn or soybeans. Most extension entomologists recognize
BIDRIN 8 as the only product that will control the
Brown stinkbug. BIDRIN 8 is effective on nymphs and
adults of both Southern Green and Brown stinkbugs,
so it is always the right choice for stinkbug control.
AMVAC has developed a Technical Bulletin for BIDRIN
8 control of stinkbugs. Contact us for more information.

Plant Bug Management:
Plant
bugs have increasingly become a major pest in cotton
due to several changes in production practices, including
increased planting of Bt cotton and implementation
of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program. These insects
will develop on a large number of alternate host
plants and migrate into fields during the entire
season. Most consultants will make control recommendations
based on “square retention” of the fruiting
bodies. States have different methods of determining
when control measures need to be implemented. BIDRIN
8 controls plant bugs reproducing in cotton plants
and the application residue controls migrating populations
from surrounding areas. BIDRIN 8 has been used extensively
over the years with positive results. The amount
of residual control depends upon neighboring host
plants and how they are growing. It is also important
to see if any reproduction is occurring in the fields.
The systemic nature of BIDRIN 8 makes for a good
management tool for this pest. Positive results have
been observed with a Trimax® plus BIDRIN 8 tank
mix. This combination provides quick knockdown and
longer residual control.
Always
read and follow label recommendations prior to use.
