2021 Update – Corporate Sustainability Report

At the center of our Environmental, Social Responsibility and Governance commitment is the principle of Sustainable Agriculture. While this concept has been used by many to mean many things, we have given it a very clear meaning. In our parlance, Sustainable Agriculture is broad enough to encompass a comprehensive ESG and Sustainability program, but clear enough to give us direction in our outlook and purpose in our activities.

With this 2021 update to our 2017/2018 Corporate Sustainability Report, we define and detail this commitment to Sustainable Agriculture and the three pillars of climate equity, environmental equity, and food equity. We also report on our progress with our sustainability initiatives and provide a 2018-2020 update of operational and environmental metrics. Further updates will include additional reporting of our international business and further disclosures of ESG projects, targets, and goals.

Core Values

We at American Vanguard Corporation are committed to global leadership in sustainability and recognize the importance of our role and effect on the planet – from our local communities to the global environment. We are committed to safely and responsibly operating our manufacturing facilities, developing our products, and managing our footprint. Throughout our organization, we strive to improve the lives and well-being of our employees and those in our communities, as well as our customers.

Safety First

Our “safety-first” culture starts within highly-regulated manufacturing plants, continues into the design of science-backed products and extends to market-leading delivery systems. As part of our emphasis on safety, we begin every meeting of the Company’s Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee with an updated dashboard on safety and health across our facilities.

Precision Agriculture

Led by our SIMPAS technology, which enables a grower to apply multiple crop inputs at variable rates according to an agronomist’s prescription, we offer a leading-edge prescription application system that enables growers to apply only what is needed, precisely where it is needed.

Making a Difference

By rewarding achievement and giving our employees a voice, we attract people who want to make a difference in their careers, in the company, and in the communities that we serve. Employee engagement was especially critical throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stakeholder Engagement

We recognize that the key to being a good corporate citizen is open and continuous engagement with our many stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, regulators, partners, university and other researchers, peers, communities and investors.

Sustainable Agriculture

We are committed to operating our business with a sense of mindfulness – toward the climate, toward the environment, and toward the good of humans and others. Access to food is a basic human right and all people should be able to rely on a stable, affordable food supply both now and into the future. We are committed to meeting that need upon a foundation of social responsibility and equity. In that vein, we believe that sustainable agriculture must include the three principles of climate equity, environmental equity, and food equity.

Company Strategy

American Vanguard Corporation is a diversified agricultural technology company with three primary emphases that contribute to Sustainable Agriculture:

  • GreenSolutions™ – including more than 120 biorational and plant nutrition products
  • Precision Application Technologies – featuring our variable-rate, multi-row SIMPAS® technology and Ultimus™, our MRV (measure, record, verify) platform, which permits not only tracking of product from factory-to-farm and back, but may be adapted to the carbon credit market
  • Core Business – for crop protection, turf and ornamental markets, and public health applications

The Company has continued its successful strategy of acquiring or licensing both new and well-established product lines and establishing market access in strategically important regions (such as Brazil and Central America), while self-funding its own technologies in furtherance of sustainable agriculture. We continue to derive value from science-based solutions as part of integrated pest management, while investing in soil health products, precision application equipment and climate-friendly technologies.
